Career Planning During Uncertainty
To say we are in uncertain times is an understatement. Are you unsure what will happen to your job in the months ahead? How do you prepare yourself for an unexpected job search?
You cannot control the future of your organization, the impact of AI, or the decrease in available jobs. What you can control is being prepared and being pro-active — as the old expression goes “hope for the best and plan for the worst.”
Here are steps you can take to be prepared:
Update your resume now. It is important to always have a resume that includes your current position and successes. Take some time right now to update your resume to reflect your current role and skills.
Refresh your LinkedIn page. Ensure your LinkedIn page reflects whatever changes you have made to your resume and your current work life. Ask yourself if your page reflects what you want to promote and share about yourself.
Explore career options beyond what you currently do. This might be a good time to explore other types of work if your current field is particularly challenged, you need to transition, or you feel unfulfilled.
Networking. There is never a more important time to utilize your network than during a job search. Begin reconnecting with your contacts now in case you need their assistance in the near future.
Create a game plan so you do not lose time if you need to begin a search.
While you work on these steps to be prepared, it’s important to keep working at the same level at your current position. Even when you are feeling stressed, it is essential to take the time to advance and prepare. It helps you to move forward and deal with the uncertainty.
